All ChatGPT users will now receive real-time updated answers from the web, powered by Bing technology.
At Microsoft Build 2023, Corporate Vice President Yusuf Mehdi announced that Bing would be the default choice for ChatGPT's web browsing. OpenAI's chatbot utilizes a large language model based on pre-trained data that was last updated in September 2021. That's why it may not always excel at providing answers on current topics.
In March, OpenAI introduced a web browsing add-on for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, essentially granting ChatGPT internet access to retrieve real-time information. The add-on already used Bing Search as its search method via the Bing API. However, web browsing through Bing is now fully native within the chat. "ChatGPT will now have a world-class search engine integrated to provide more timely and up-to-date answers with web access," said Mehdi during the announcement. He also added that ChatGPT's responses will include web data and citations similar to Bing's chat responses.
But the Microsoft/OpenAI partnership doesn't end there. Developers can now use a platform to create add-ons that work for both ChatGPT and Bing, as well as for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Windows Copilot. Windows Copilot, featuring AI capabilities on Windows 11, will have Bing chat and all interoperable add-ons that come with it.
