For the first time in 28 years of JD Power's car owner survey, there is a consecutive year-over-year decline in satisfaction, with most complaints directed towards in-car infotainment systems.

If you've ever unleashed a string of curses while trying to control your car's air conditioning because it's buried under several menus on a damn touchscreen, you're not alone. At a time when car companies are competing to outdo each other by adding more and more technology to their products, people are increasingly fed up with their car's infotainment systems.

According to JD Power's Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) study, overall satisfaction among car owners is 845 (on a 1,000-point scale), a two-point decrease from last year and three points less than in 2021. This is the first time in the 28-year history of the study that the consumer research firm has recorded a consecutive year-over-year decline in owner satisfaction.

Unsurprisingly, more and more people are choosing not to use their car's native infotainment controls. Only 56% of owners prefer to use their vehicle's integrated system for audio playback, a decrease from 70% in 2020, according to JD Power. Less than half of the owners said they like to use their car's native controls for navigation, voice recognition, or to make phone calls.

💡 Insight for Entrepreneurs:
This news highlights a crucial point for entrepreneurs: not all technology adds value to products and services. As car companies continue to add more and more technology to their vehicles, it seems that car owners are increasingly dissatisfied with complex and unnecessary infotainment systems. Entrepreneurs should keep in mind that value and utility are key to customer satisfaction. Adding features “just because” or “because it's the latest” can end up creating a bad user experience, which ultimately can negatively affect brand perception and customer satisfaction.
